It may seem strange that it took me a long time to sort out “the reason” that Thalia wanted Alec “distracted” by someone else. When I landed on the only real possibility, it seemed too surreal to be true. Thalia wanting to go after Luz? This was the sort of thing – like grown women having a pillow-fight in nothing but baby oil and skimpy lingerie – that didn't actually happen in real life.

Also, Luz didn't seem like the kind of girl that would haul off and have a lesbian experience. She seemed, as she always had, like a Mexican barbie-doll version of June Cleaver.

Or maybe this was Chris's idea, and Thalia was just into it because of him.

That made more sense to me as a probable explanation, if only because the idea of Thalia chasing after Luz for herself was just too… erotic to be true.

“Dude,” a voice said behind me, after I had sat on the dock freezing and contemplating all of this for a long time. “Did you fall asleep out here?”

It was Chris.

“I… uh… yeah,” I stammered.

“See Thalia?”

I pointed at the lake.

“Shit.”

Chris didn't expound on this. He sighed. “Goin' fishin' with us?”

“Uh… yeah, I mean, I guess.”

“What time did she leave?”

I looked up at Chris. He was more concerned than I had ever seen him before about where his girlfriend was. Half the time I wasn't even sure he remembered he had a girlfriend unless she was directly sucking his cock.

“I guess like, when the sun was coming up, I don't know how long ago -”

“Shit. Man, I really wanted her to come.” He looked down at me. 'She can spear a fucking fish, man.”

He waited for this to have sufficient effect on me before taking a large step in the direction of the stairs.

“Wait a minute, you going to -”

Chris was already walking up the steps. “She'll be out there all day, man. At least an hour. She probably swam to the other side.” He took a few more steps. “Bus is leaving in ten.”

And then, from the top:

“Alec's saying get a move on, man. Sun's up.”
